According to QZ, when some companies created algorithms to rank resumes, the programmers quickly learned, much to their alarm, that the algorithms often ranked women’s resumes lower than men’s resumes. When it comes to AI-based systems, the systems are only as robust as the data programmers are putting into the systems. If a company already has some intrinsic bias in hiring practices, or if the representative sample is itself biased, problems can arise. HOUSTON, Texas. A Dallas woman just received a $1 million dollar verdict for sexual harassment and pregnancy discrimination after she was fired from her job at an oilfield services company. According to the Dallas Morning News, the woman claims that she was fired days after she was hired, after she revealed to her co-workers that she was pregnant. Women sometimes face high levels of discrimination on the oilfield, where they may be a minority among men. HOUSTON, Texas. According to CNN, a former WeWork employee is suing the company, claiming she was fired in retaliation after reporting sexual assault. The woman reported being sexually assaulted and groped at two company events where alcohol was served. She further claims that she never received a poor performance review and believes that she fired as an act of retaliation for reporting two instances of sexual assault on the job.
